Almost 150 area youngsters showed up Saturday at Sand Springs Lake to take part in the 21st annual Sand Springs Kids Fishing Derby.

In addition to the trophies, Zebco rods and reels, fishing tackle, prizes, and grab bags were given out so that “no young angler went home empty handed,” organizers said.

In addition, awards also were given out for the largest turtle caught.

The event was hosted by the Sand Springs Parks and Recreation Department and put on by Sand Springs American Legion Post 17. Derby sponsors were Woody’s Corner Bait and Tackle and Walmart.

Grant Gerondale, parks department director, and American Legion officers thanked the event’s chief organizer, Kathy McFarland, American Legion Auxiliary Poppy Princess Mackenzie Burdge, and volunteers from the auxiliary and the Blue Star Mothers.

Jacob Parks won the Biggest Fish Trophy with a score of 15.2 ounces.

In the 6-8 age group, first place went to Brenda Wright; second, Kelsi Tabor; third, James Cauffield; and smallest fish, Austin Savage.
